The Masters in November gives golf a big sendoff

Any optimism that the next Masters will be restored to its full glory of spring blooms and the endless chorus of cheers was dampened only by the reality of the calendar and the recent spikes in coronavirus cases.

It has been eight months since Augusta National said it was postponing the Masters because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and seven months since the club targeted two weeks before Thanksgiving as the most practical time to play this year.

“I’m hopeful that we will see improved conditions regarding this virus, but April is less than five months away, so there’s no assurance of that,” Masters Chairman Fred Ridley said. “But we do have hopes that the tournament in April will be closer to normal than it is right now.”

There is very little normal about the 84th Masters, starting with the opening tee shots from both the first and the 10th tees.

The first legal marijuana operation in Chula Vista opened for business last week.

Grasshopper Delivery, which delivers cannabis products to South County residents, officially opened its doors Nov. 1. This is the first business to open since the city created a recreational cannabis ordinance and voters approved a special sales tax measure in 2018.

The company is owned and operated by Chula Vista residents. Managers have also made it a priority to hire locally.

“Grasshopper Delivery is proud to be the first commercial cannabis operation to open in Chula Vista,” president Andres Camberos said in a statement.

Under Chula Vista’s existing regulations, a total of 12 cannabis retail businesses are allowed to open in the city. But they must be spread out. Each of the city’s four council districts has a limit of three retail operations, which include both storefront dispensaries and delivery services.

“We welcome Grasshopper Delivery to the

A fan-free Masters means loss of best week of the year for some SC hotels, restaurants | Columbia Business

COLUMBIA — Golf fans will be happy to see The Masters on their TV screens beginning Thursday. For hotels and restaurants in South Carolina, it hardly feels like the tournament is back at all.

For those businesses in Columbia and other areas within an easy drive of Augusta, Masters week usually is the busiest one of the year. Travelers from around the country and world come in to watch golf, play some rounds and recreate.

With no spectators allowed this year because of the risk of spreading coronavirus, the effect seems to have disappeared.

Sapakoff: No Masters fans, no need for 6,000 pounds of beef at TBonz

“It is the biggest week of the year for hotels and restaurants,” said Bobby Williams, board chairman of the S.C. Restaurant and Lodging Association.

Lengths of stays during the Masters are longer than a college football weekend; guests come to the state and stay for the whole week, Williams said. They might have passes

Central Florida lands hub for Jetsons-like ‘flying cars’

The nation’s first regional hub for “flying cars” is being built in central Florida and once completed in five years, the vehicles will be able to take passengers from Orlando to Tampa in a half hour, officials said Wednesday.

The Tavistock Development Corp. said it was constructing a Jetsons-like aviation facility in Orlando’s Lake Nona area, the mixed-use planned community it built. Lake Nona already is home to several medical and research facilities.

The aircraft will be supplied by Lilium, a Germany-based aviation company that manufacturers the industry’s only five-passenger “electric vertical takeoff and landing” aircraft. At the moment, the Lilium Jets can travel up to 185 miles (nearly 300 kilometers) on a one-hour charge.

Passengers wanting a ride on the aircraft will be able to book reservations via their phones in a way similar to ride-share companies Uber and Lyft, officials said.

The vehicles flying and landing
