UFC 255 is set to kick off from Las Vegas on Saturday night with a pair of title fights on the marquee. Both the men’s and women’s flyweight titles will be on the line as Deiveson Figueiredo looks to make his first defense of the 125-pound belt when he takes on Alex Perez while Valentina Shevchenko tries to defend his title for a fourth time against Jennifer Maia.

It might not be the deepest card in UFC history, but it has plenty of names fans will recognize when fights begin to commence from Sin City. Among them is Joaquin Buckley, the viral sensation fresh off his Knockout of the Year in October when he takes on Jordan Wright on the prelims.

Amidst the pandemic, South County businesses find ways to connect with customers

WATSONVILLE — On the very same March day Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statewide stay-at-home order, Ben Ward, Erix Celis and Jorge Vazquez were signing paperwork to take over Elkhorn Slough Brewing in Watsonville.

The employees-turned-owners said the order announcement marked the beginning of making their new business work, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was definitely a moment of panic,” Ward said, “but our first thought was we want to do what’s safest and best for our community, rather than what is best for our business.”

Ward, Celis and Vazquez decided to only open for to-go orders, which can happen in-person, or online through their website. They’ve also used their space as a drop-off location for charity drives. The brewery is currently hosting a winter supply drive for local unhoused families.

The three owners of what’s now The Slough Brewing Collective, say they already envisioned building their business around community

Central Europe is getting ready for electric cars, and so should you!

It’s a sign of the times: the no. 1 most leased car brand in CE, Skoda, has announced the launch of Enyaq iV, the first fully-electric business model of Skoda. It is slated to hit the market in late 2020 and it is proof, if proof be needed, that Central Europe is getting ready for plugged-in mobility. But is the required infrastructure available and are governments following with incentives to promote EVs?

Let’s get this out of the way first: the share of electric cars on the roads in Central Europe may be low, but even in the most electrified European markets the numbers still struggle to hit the 5% market share. Of all cars on the roads today, 0.04% are electric in Poland, 0.56% in the Czech Republic, 0.10% in Slovakia, 0.20% in Hungary and 0.06% in Romania.

How could Netflix possibly know which genre best fits the tastes of the user?

All thanks to the state-of-the-art Recommendation Engines.

A recommendation engine is a data filtering tool that uses data and algorithms to filter a catalog predicting relevant items and products to the user. Recommendation engines combine both content-based and collaborative-based approaches. Now the content-based approach relies on the intrinsic items the user has earlier showed interest in, thus suggesting a similar pattern of these properties. On the other hand, a collaborative-based approach analyzes all the users of the service and recommends a new user based on the relevant items of the other users having a similar taste.

Pope: Involve poor people in planning post-pandemic economy

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis urged young economists, entrepreneurs and business leaders Saturday to promote post-pandemic development models that involve the poor.

Francis, in a videotaped message for a forum of young people in Assisi, Italy, said the worst reaction once the coronavirus pandemic ends would be to “fall even more deeply into feverish consumerism and forms of selfish self-protection.”

Instead, Francis said, the poor should be invited to participate in discussions about creating a “different economic narrative” that he thinks is urgently needed.

The pope pressed young people to help change production systems and consumption patterns to make them more sustainable.

He said the future will be a “time that reminds us that we are not condemned to economic models whose immediate interest is limited to profit and promoting favorable public policies, unconcerned with their human, social and environmental cost.”

During the pandemic, Francis has decried that the people

Economic recovery from COVID-19 requires a long-term small business strategy

Andrew Mikula
 |  Guest Columnist

COVID-19 will frame economic policy discussions for years to come, just as the Great Recession did a decade ago. The economic impact of the pandemic includes widespread job losses, and millions of Americans are at risk of falling into poverty. COVID-19 is also accelerating pre-existing market trends – such as automation and online shopping – and their potentially devastating impact on the thousands of small businesses vulnerable to these market shifts. Will these businesses be able to adapt?

Indicators of the growing prevalence of these market shifts during the pandemic have already shown up in the data. For example, E-commerce firms have seen year-over-year sales growth during this crisis, likely at the expense of smaller, “Main Street” brick-and-mortar stores.

Similarly, surveys of commuters show substantial interest in working from home even after a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available. That’s bad news for transportation and urban businesses,

Activists rally in Florida against Governor Ron DeSantis

The proposed legislation activists are rallying against is called the “anti-mob legislation draft.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — Activists are gathering Saturday in front of the Duval County Court House to rally against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ new “anti-mob” proposal which some are calling “anti-protest.”

“This proposed legislation is, undemocratic, dictatorial and blatantly unconstitutional,” local activist Ben Frazier of the Northside Coalition Jacksonville said in a news release. “The proposed legislation is dangerous because it’s a dog whistle to let armed vigilantes know it’s open season on peaceful protestors.”

The proposal is called the “anti-mob legislation draft.” It would expand Florida’s Stand Your Ground law and justify the use of force against those who are “interrupting or impairing” business during “violent or disorderly assembly.

The proposal would also increase criminal penalties for people involved in “disorderly assemblies,” making it a third-degree felony to block traffic during protests and provide immunity to drivers
