The Tennessean’s longtime columnist Mary Hance, better known as Ms. Cheap, is retiring.

Her columns on free things to do, the best prices in town and how to get coupon discounts have been a favorite of readers for decades.

She started her career as a copy clerk at the Nashville Banner in January 1976, and after 45 years, she will close her notebook and turn off her computer as she retires on Jan. 4, 2021.

Hance, and two other longtime Tennessean staffers, photographers Larry McCormack and Shelley Mays, have accepted the company’s voluntary severance offer. McCormack and Mays will be leaving Dec. 1.
