An online program for the state’s hospitality and tourism businesses grant collapsed Thursday morning, just after it was opened to applications.

Hospitality, tourism and entertainment companies can apply for up to $20,000 in Economic Recovery Grant funds, part of a $40 million relief package Gov. Janet Mills unveiled this week.

Business owners began experiencing problems after the online portal opened 9 a.m. Thursday morning. Some applicants, contacting the state through Facebook, said they started when the portal opened but were unable to complete the process because the program’s submit function did not work. It brought them back to the beginning of the application instead.

Less than two hours after the application was opened, the Department of Economic and Community Development shut it down because of a technical issue. Applications will be open again on Friday at 9 a.m., a department spokeswoman said.

As stimulus discussions heat up in Washington again, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters Wednesday that President Trump is prepared to sign a new stimulus proposal put forth by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday.

“The President will sign the McConnell proposal that he put forward yesterday,” Mnuchin said, according to Reuters.

McConnell’s proposal is similar to two $500 billion bills he has already attempted to pass in the Senate (Democrats blocked both on the grounds that they were too small), and includes $257 billion in spending for the popular Paycheck Protection Program for forgivable loans, a one-month extension of the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, and liability protections for businesses and healthcare providers.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — In a year where Oregon has weathered a global pandemic that has killed more than 900 residents, forest fires that ravaged 1 million acres and ongoing protests in the state’s largest city, Gov. Kate Brown’s budget proposal attempts to mitigate the effects of the turmoil.

A key part of the Democrat’s 2021-2023 budget released Tuesday is to secure additional coronavirus relief funds, as current monies are set to expire on Dec. 31. For months Brown has urged Congress to immediately reinstitute the $600 supplemental benefit for unemployment and enhance federal employment compensation.

“2020 has challenged Oregon in unimaginable ways. We have been tested to the core, and the most vital needs of Oregon families — health, safety, education, housing, and the ability to learn a living — have all been challenged in new ways,” Brown said.

Most businesses have run through the loans and grant funding they’ve received, and the pandemic stretches on, said Rep. Mohamud Noor, vice chair of the House Jobs and Economic Development Finance Division.

Your hometown carries a lot of weight. Just naming the city, town, or suburb where you grew up immediately tells others something about you. Maybe it’s a suburban community renowned for the good school district and club soccer teams; perhaps it’s a bustling urban neighborhood filled with trendy bars and restaurants. Either way, the character of your hometown helps new acquaintances gain an initial understanding of who you are.

This principle is especially true for the 50 places on this list. Each town holds the distinction of being the richest location in its state. Stacker used the most recent U.S. Census Bureau Five-Year American Community Survey data, last updated in December 2019, to pull crucial information about each town, including the unemployment rate and median household income. The places are ranked by the median household income, and ties are broken by the percentage of people annually earning more than $200,000.

State health officials have ordered Self Made Training Facility in Scottsdale to close for violating rules aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19, but owner Jeffrey Mahaffey says he is keeping the business open.

Mahaffey said he has been cited dozens of times by Scottsdale police since summer for disobeying the governor’s executive orders. Now, he refuses to comply with the state order, which he says is overreaching.

He said he tore down the closure notice that the Arizona Department of Health Services hung in his gym’s window on Wednesday, and he won’t stop doing business even if the state tries to padlock his doors.

“They can try,” Mahaffey told The Arizona Republic on Friday. “I’ll just take the doors off the hinges if that’s the case … I will not close my business.”

During the height of the protests over the police killing of George Floyd in May, Rose Barboza felt conflicted. She wanted to join the demonstrations but had a 4-year-old at her Saco home and was concerned about catching or spreading the coronavirus. Instead, Barboza began to consider another way to fight — using her purchasing power.

Online directories popped up nationally, spotlighting Black-owned businesses and educating people about how seeking out these businesses can help, at the local level, reduce the racial wealth gap, support entrepreneurship and job creation for Black Americans, and send a message that representation matters.

State requirement prompts Longmeadow to plan no-action Town Meeting

LONGMEADOW — Town officials are planning a Town Meeting next month that won’t address any of the usual business.

The Dec. 9 meeting is necessary for procedural reasons set out by the state, but town officials are hoping to keep attendance to a minimum in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“It is my intent to convene the special town meeting for the purpose of hearing motions to take no action on the warrant articles by consent agenda, then dissolving the meeting,” Moderator Rebecca M. Townsend said in an announcement Tuesday.

Townsend has postponed Town Meeting multiple times due to the pandemic.
